Blach 2019

This article is one in a series about some of our lead Golf Tournament donors. The Foundation had the opportunity to speak with these generous companies about their business successes, how they embrace philanthropy, and their histories with the District and the Foundation.

Blach Construction has been heavily invested in the education market since its inception in 1970, partnering with many of the Bay Area’s most prominent K-12 schools, community colleges, and major universities.

“The San Mateo County Community College District was very advanced in its approach to delivering projects,” says Blach President, Dan Rogers, when describing the genesis of the company’s relationship with the District ten years ago. Historically, California legislature did not give community college districts much flexibility in project delivery. But with a large bond program in place, José Nuñez, SMCCCD Vice Chancellor of Facilities Planning, Maintenance & Operations, worked to change legislation. Recognizing this highly active approach, Blach determined this forward-thinking District, located in a “geographic sweet spot,” would make an ideal partner.

Additionally, giving back to the communities in which employees live and work has always been important to Dan Rogers and to Blach. “The majority of our efforts are aimed at education-focused activities for low-income youth-in-need. The fundraising mission of the Foundation’s Golf Tournament is directly aligned with our company’s philanthropic philosophy.” Blach not only supports the Promise Scholars Program through the tournament, but is very active with the Peninsula College Fund (PCF), which provides scholarships for first generation college students. The PCF honored that support by presenting Mike Blach with its 2019 Community Service Award.

Blach Construction is currently erecting Cañada College’s beautiful new kinesiology building, set to finish in 2020, and hopes to tackle more District projects in the near future. “Our portfolio includes a ton of education clients and we count our partnership with this District among the best. Seeing the impact we’ve made at the colleges over the years, as well as the results of our participation in the Golf Tournament are equally and extremely gratifying.”
