How to Write Scholarship Thank‑You Notes
Congratulations — you have been awarded a scholarship! Now it is time to say “thank you.”
Deadline: June 1, 2026
Scholarships awarded through the San Mateo County Community Colleges Foundation are made possible by generous community members who invest in the future of students within the District.
Hearing directly from students is a powerful way to connect with your benefactor and may even help you build a mentor-like relationship.
Tips for writing your thank you letter:
- Write clearly and concisely. Letters should be at least two paragraphs in length and no more than one page.
- Be yourself. Be sincere and willing to express your enthusiasm.
- Avoid AI. ChatGPT can’t convey your true spirit.
- Proofread carefully. Double-check for typos and grammatical errors.
General thank you letter format:
- Use a formal salutation with appropriate titles. Do not use first names. If you do not have this information, address your letter to “Dear Scholarship Donor.”
- Begin by introducing yourself and thanking the donor. Mention the specific scholarship and the academic year for which it was received, but not the amount.
- Share something about yourself. Provide brief background information that may include your hometown, family, what led you to pursue further education, what you’re studying, and your career goals.
- Explain how this scholarship will benefit you.
- Say “thank you” once again.
- Sign your letter.
