Scholarship Spotlight: Thuc Nguyen’s Journey to Advocacy and Education
February 18th, 2025
At College of San Mateo, students like Thuc Nguyen embody the perseverance and dedication that the San Mateo County Community Colleges Foundation strives to support. As an education and community leadership major, Thuc’s passion lies in empowering young people and ensuring education remains accessible to all, regardless of background.
“The way children see the world—with openness and curiosity—is something we should all strive for,” Thuc shares. “The best way to create lasting change is by investing in youth through education.”
As she prepares to transfer to San José State University, Thuc hopes to work in education policy and legislation, advocating for equitable access to education—especially in states that lack California’s resources.
The Impact of Scholarships and Student Support Services
Thuc’s academic journey has not been easy. Last semester, she faced serious health challenges, spending time in the hospital while also dealing with financial insecurity. The scholarships she received provided a critical safety net, allowing her to focus on her recovery and education instead of worrying about rent and bills.
“Without financial support, I don’t think I’d be back in school,” Thuc explains. “It provided the security I needed to keep going.”
In addition to scholarships, campus resources like CSM’s SparkPoint program helped her access food assistance and emergency housing during a difficult time. Many students face similar challenges, and programs like the Finish Line Fund exist to help remove financial barriers and keep students on track to graduate.
To the donors who make these programs possible, Thuc shares her gratitude.
“You are doing so much more than you realize. Some students would be sleeping in their cars right now without your generosity. The fact that you believe in us and are willing to invest in our future—it changes lives.”
Building a Brighter Future
Despite the challenges, Thuc has thrived at College of San Mateo. One of her most impactful experiences was being mentored by Alex, a former counselor who helped guide her through difficult times.
“He really believed in me when I was struggling,” she recalls. “Seeing someone who was once a student here come back and stay to help others says a lot about this community.”
Inspired by that support, Thuc now works at CSM herself, helping students navigate the same struggles she once faced. She has also been involved in the arts, choreographing performances for CSM’s dance program and showcasing her oil paintings in local exhibitions.
Looking ahead, Thuc hopes to complete her master’s degree, work in education policy, and help expand support programs like the Finish Line Fund to students across the country.
Her advice for students facing financial hardships: take a breath, don’t be afraid to ask for help, and most importantly, don’t be too hard on yourself.
The San Mateo County Community Colleges Foundation is committed to ensuring students like Thuc can stay in school, graduate, and pursue their dreams—without financial barriers holding them back.
